UK Man Detained for Punching Singer Leona Lewis in the Face

A man was detained under the Mental Health Act today for punching Leona Lewis in the face.

Peter Kowalczyk, 29, of Waterloo, said “Gotcha” as he hit the singer at a book signing, City of Westminster magistrates heard.

Melanie Lee, prosecuting, said the star suffered a swollen face and whiplash in the attack in London on 14 October.

Ms Lee read a statement by Lewis saying: “I feel devastated. I am very frightened about going out in public.” District Judge Howard Riddle ordered schizophrenic Kowalczyk, who admitted common assault, to remain in hospital for an indeterminate period.

A British court has ordered a man to remain hospitalized after he admitted assaulting singer Leona Lewis during a book signing session.

Peter Kowalczyk had been charged with punching the pop star in the face as she went to sign his copy of her autobiography in central London on Oct. 14.

Kowalczyk pleaded guilty to common assault. A judge ordered the 29-year-old to remain in the hospital under mental health laws.

Prosecutor Melanie Lee, reading out a witness statement by Lewis, said Monday the singer felt completely devastated by the attack. In the statement Lewis says: “Now I am very frightened about going out in public.”

Lee says the attack left Lewis with a red and swollen face.
